What exactly can you expect while residing in a personal care facility?
To give you an idea of what a typical day is like, we asked an actual personal care resident and this is her story:
“Realizing that I needed help with some daily chores was difficult to accept. I have a few friends who at one time were reluctant to give up their home and independence, but now love their lives in personal care communities. And now I myself know why!
My morning begins at 7 a.m. and I have a little more than an hour to prepare for my day before breakfast begins. That’s plenty of time for me to freshen up, dress, apply a touch of makeup, and fix my hair. Someone is always available if I need help with anything.
At 8:15 breakfast is served. Sometimes I have scrambled eggs, French toast, or pancakes, and fruit or Danish with my morning coffee. Afterward, it’s a bit of exercise at Sit and Fit which I love because it gets me moving and enthusiastic for the rest of my day.
Before looking at the activity calendar, I check in with the nurse for my morning medications, then relax for a bit while reading the newspaper before heading to my first activity.
There is always a variety of activities to choose from and I try to fit a few things into my day. Some days I play cards, work on a craft project, join in baking with other residents, or attend a cooking demonstration by Pickering Manor’s chef.
Other days I spend quiet time reading in the library, attending a chair yoga session, spirituality group, or seminar and then enjoy some live entertainment later in the day…Elvis was even here one day!
Lunch is the biggest meal of the day and my favorite! It’s like eating out at a restaurant every day!
We have a choice of healthy and nutritious options and the chef changes the menu weekly, monthly, and seasonally so it’s always a surprise to see what choices we have to choose from. Today I had flank steak, rosemary potatoes, parmesan corn on the cob, and ice cream for dessert! Never would I have made such an elaborate meal living on my own!
If it’s a nice day, I’ll sit outside on the porch with my friends and chat or go for a walk. Other days I’ll watch TV for a couple of hours in my room and just relax. Once a month I treat myself to a relaxing massage…I don’t have to go far because there’s a spa right here at Pickering! Occasionally I’ll even go on a bus trip with other residents to shop or dine out.
Since lunch is our big meal of the day, we have a light dinner. I love the homemade soups…my favorite is Italian Wedding! We even have picnics and cookouts sometimes.
After dinner, when I’m relaxing in my room, the nurse brings me my evening medications. This way I can never forget!
My favorite evenings at Pickering include a movie and popcorn night.
At the Friday night social hour, I can enjoy a nice glass of wine or beer with my friends and on holidays the staff always plans something special for us. Oh, and I never miss Wednesday night bingo!
My family is always welcome to enjoy time with me here or take me out on an adventure; we even have family nights with special activities for all of us to enjoy together. The staff encourages us all to be as independent as possible, but should I need therapy, it’s right here on campus.
Someone is always around to lend a helping hand or sit with me if I just want to talk. If I have an emergency and need immediate assistance there’s a pull cord in my room and I have my life alert button for safety to use throughout the building. That gives me so much peace of mind.
Coming to live at Pickering Manor is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I am never bored, have so many friends, dine on tasty nutritious meals, and there is a staff of wonderful people who make sure my every need is met including laundry and housekeeping. What more could I ask for!”
