Newtown Resident Wins 2013 Mercedes-Benz
NEWTOWN, Pa. – As Newtown resident Sue Bannon walked through the door of Pickering Manor on the snowy evening of Jan. 25 she broke into an impromptu “happy dance.” Not surprising when you consider she had just received a phone call informing her that she was the winner of a brand new Mercedes-Benz. Since last July, Pickering Manor has been selling $100 raffle tickets for the car, which was supplied by Mercedes-Benz of Princeton, to help defray the costs of renovating its 22 personal care rooms. The raffle – which also served as a kick off for the nursing home’s 50th anniversary – sold 634 tickets and raised nearly $25,000. Bannon purchased her ticket last summer when she saw the car displayed at the Middletown Grange Fair. The winning ticket was picked at the conclusion of a pre-drawing cocktail hour that was attended by more than 100 hopeful ticket holders. Pickering resident Evelyn Fahrety had the honor of picking the winning ticket out of a gold tumbler. Although Bannon was not present for the drawing, a quick phone call from Newtown Mayor Dennis O’Brien roused her and her husband off the couch and up the street to Pickering where they were met by a cheering crowd of well-wishers. After a round of photos and high fives, the smiling couple walked back into the snowy night. Just before they were out of earshot, Sue turned to her husband and exclaimed, “Oh my God, we won a car!”
