Pickering Manor Launches Expansion
For more than 55 years, we have made a meaningful difference in the lives of senior citizens with our dedication to enhancing the quality of life and honoring the dignity of each individual. Today, we help seniors live life to the fullest by providing exceptional care services in a place they call home.
Pickering Manor’s Unique Role in Serving the Community
Pickering Manor has remained an independent, single-campus retirement community since its doors opened in 1963. In spite of economic downturns and volatile business environments, Pickering Manor has been able to thrive because of its Leadership Team and Board of Directors’ insistence on fiscal stability and honoring its mission to maintain its status of being a community resource for care for Newtown and the surrounding vicinity. It was Pickering Manor’s founder’s intention to give back to the community that he enjoyed so much, and the Board of Directors and Leadership Team at Pickering Manor have honored this tradition in their decision-making.
Because of its well trained and dedicated staff, Pickering Manor has consistently earned a five-star rating, the highest score possible, from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This rating places Pickering in the top 10 percent of nursing homes nationwide. In addition, US News & World has consistently rated us as one of the Best Nursing Homes in the country.
Pickering Manor was the first facility in Bucks County to be certified for Music and Memory, a program that uses personalized music that has been proven to be successful in treating those with cognitive impairment and dementia.
It is time for Pickering to offer these excellent services to the full complement of the aging population, and to do this, we must add space to our facility in the form of new construction.
Pickering Manor Expansion of Services to Continue Serving the Community
Even though Pickering Manor continually achieves a five-star rating and maintains an impeccable reputation in the community, the leadership team has recognized that we are undeserving not only our own population but the community at large as well.
Pickering Manor offers extensive rehabilitation services and recently added brand new equipment to its therapy room. With the Bucks County area having many community hospitals offering orthopedic surgery, rehabilitation services after procedures such as hip and knee replacements are in high demand.
Our facilities, in their current design, offer mostly semi-private accommodations where a bed is available in our skilled nursing unit. While excellent care and rehabilitation therapy is provided, the environment in which a short-term rehabilitation patient is living during the therapy is not what the typical post-surgery patient has come to expect. Pickering Manor seeks to expand, with new construction, to provide a dedicated short-term rehabilitation unit. This facility will include fully private accommodations concentrating solely on the rehabilitation of the injured, rather than rehabilitate them within the population of long-term skilled nursing residents.
Another area of growth that is needed is for our Memory Care residents. Pickering Manor currently has 22 Personal Care beds in a dedicated unit. A typical personal care resident’s condition upon admission has changed drastically in the last decade. The amount of dementia and/or cognitive impairment was seen in a person who needs some assistance, but does not qualify for skilled care has increased dramatically. Because of the advancements in medical treatments, the elderly are able to remain at home longer without the need for a full-time facility. While the advancements in keeping the physical body healthy longer have advanced, the advancements in short-term memory loss have not kept up with the same pace. This leaves the population needing personal assistance physically healthier, but typically, mentally deteriorating. Just as in a younger person in need of rehabilitation from surgery is expecting a high level of therapy in a private setting, the memory care population thrives in a dedicated Memory Care unit, with private rooms and a dedicated trained staff to accommodate their needs. Because Pickering Manor already houses 22 Personal Care residents, with and without cognitive impairment, this addition and programming is also part of Pickering Manor’s expansion plan.
Knowing that Pickering Manor has deep roots in Bucks County history, the Board of Directors have planned carefully for several years to develop an addition to its current layout that will address these critical needs, while maintaining the unique, small, home-like atmosphere that has set us apart from our competitors in the region.
